This American Gold Buffalo coin was introduced in 2006, and it was the first .9999 pure gold coin produced by the United States Mint. Its inspiring design is based upon the original Buffalo Nickel, released for the first time by the US Mint in 1913. James Earle Fraser was the man responsible for the design of the popular Buffalo Nickel.
Fraser was born and raised in Winona, Minnesota, and grew up with frontier experiences as a part of his youth. These images remained with him as he aged and became an artist and sculptor. In 1911, the administration of William Howard Taft selected Fraser to redesign the nation’s five-cent piece, replacing the Charles E. Barber Liberty Head nickel design.

His design featured the image of a Native American chieftain on the obverse, which Fraser created by combining the facial features of three real-life tribal leaders of the day. On the reverse, the image of Black Diamond. The bison was a resident of the Central Park Zoo in New York City at the time.
On the obverse of all 2016 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins is the image of the chieftain, with the word “Liberty” and the year of minting included. The reverse features Black Diamond’s depiction, with multiple engravings around the image.
The United States Mint produces all American Gold Buffalo coins at the West Point Mint.
These 2016 coins represent the 10th anniversary striking of the series, and are available to you right now.
